Food, recipes and practices to help you heal & thrive with Ankylosing Spondylitis.

My Journey

After several debilitating, painful and traumatic months I was finally diagnosed with an autoimmune / arthritic disease caled Ankylosing Spondylitis in late 2019. I have since spent countless hours researching the condition and specifically what I can do to help myself naturally. I have never been more grateful for all of the knowledge that I have acquired over the years as a therapist. With this knowledge and my continued experience of this disease it is my desire to offer a resource that could help those people in a similar situation. I want to inspire people to look at things in a different way, and to try new things that could have a big impact on how this painful disease effects them. If this is you I hope you will find this website a useful resource and please do get in contact if I can help you in any way.

"What I have found is that diet plays a major role in controlling the severity of symptoms and that balancing the gut microbiome is key."
"The research I have found and the diet I now follow has given a whole new meaning to the saying - let food be your medicine.”
Helen Mawson

The AS diet

With hours of research under my belt, I set about incorporating the changes to my diet and lifestyle the main change is switching to a no starch diet. This is important to balance the gut microbiome, essentially starving the bad bacteria and feeding the good bacteria and thus healing the gut. It’s more complex than this in reality but I  will leave it at that for now.

My Recipes & meal plans

After months of bland salads, I couldn’t take anymore so I set about creating recipes and meals that satisfied both my strict no starch  requirements and my taste buds! Over many months I have prepared countless recipes and spent hours in my kitchen and it’s taken a lot of patience, time and effort. I now believe however that I have a good stash of recipes and meal plans that work and that will help me stick to this diet long term.

My Mission

I want to help those struggling with this disease become as healthy as they can be. I know the impact the disease can have on every aspect of our lives. Through my knowledge as a therapist, my hours of research and applying different practices I feel I now have an approach that helps and I am driven to share this.
